What to Expect from Counselling
Demystifying the Counselling Process
What to Expect from Counselling: Your First Steps Towards Healing
Taking the step to seek counselling when you’re grieving is a courageous decision. You might be wondering what the process involves, or perhaps even what to expect from our sessions together. My aim is to make this journey as comfortable as possible, providing a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space where you can freely express your pain, thoughts, and emotions
Your Confidential Space to Process
Our sessions will be a dedicated time just for you, focused entirely on your unique experience of loss. I’ll listen with deep empathy and understanding, allowing you to share as much or as little as you feel ready for. We’ll work at your pace, exploring the complex emotions that grief brings – from sadness and anger to guilt, confusion, or even relief – without judgment. This is a place where every feeling is valid.
How We’ll Work Together
While every person’s grief journey is unique, our sessions will typically involve open conversation and exploration. I’ll provide guidance and support and offer tools and strategies to navigate your loss. We might discuss memories of your loved one, explore how the loss has impacted your daily life, or identify healthy coping mechanisms to manage overwhelming feelings. My role is to walk alongside you, offering insights and a fresh perspective when you feel lost.
The number of sessions is completely up to you. There is no need to decide on day one how many sessions you want, we can tailor the number and frequency of sessions to whatever works best for you. Sessions are usually 50 minutes long and are held at my practice in Douglas.
Outcomes of Your Journey
It’s important to understand that grief counselling isn’t ever about “getting over” your loss. Instead, it’s about learning to integrate it into your life in a way that allows you to carry your memories, while finding moments of peace and rebuilding. Through our work together, I hope to help you find clarity, develop greater resilience, and learn effective ways to manage emotions that once felt overwhelming. You might also discover new ways to honour your loved one, find renewed meaning.
If you have any further questions about what to expect or how counselling can help you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to provide the support you need.
